From an execution perspective, there are 2 key insights on prioritising. These are further explored in the excellent review of the topic by the Franklin Covey Institute.
- Any operational plan needs to recognise significant time is required to ensure the day-to-day work is done. This has a real impact on the capacity for introducing new initiatives.
- Best practice for execution is the implementation of only one breakthrough initiative at any one time. This is important as maintaining processes to support multiple breakthrough initiatives (especially weekly meetings and scorecard updates) would likely compromise the follow-up, thus removing one of the critical requirements for successful execution.
